Paring knives come in handy where chefs knifes are too large and wont make the cut. They are best for slicing and mincing items that are too small to be cut by and 8 inch knife, such as delicate fruits, shallots and any other small food that require detail. Although it is great for smaller foods, I wouldn’t use a paring knife to cut harder and denser foods like potatoes and carrots.
This review is on the Dalstrong Gladiator Series Paring Knife. This paring knife by Dalstrong is part of their Gladiator Series of knives, and if you haven’t already, check out my reviews on the other knives in this series. This series of knives are made out of high carbon ThyssenKrupp German steel ensuring for a constant sharp blade and good stain resistance. The blades are sharpened at 18 degrees on each side which enables for thin slicing and dicing.
The knife came in a very classy gift box with a magnet closure, and included a handy booklet with instructions on how to properly use the knife as well as care instructions for the knife. Also included in the box was a nice key chain with the Dalstrong emblem on it. The knife has a very professional look and feel to it, comparable to other premium knives on the market.
This particular paring knife is 3.5 inches long, which is the standard for paring knives. The handle of the knife is both beautiful and ergonomic, fitting in the palm of my hand comfortably. The handle is composed of a dark brownish black Spanish pakkawood held in place by 3 rivets. At the base of the handle is a nice bolster which gives the knife nice balance.
Overall while using this knife, I was able to get clean smooth cuts. Whether it was sectioning an orange or hulling strawberries, it did the job well. Included with the knife was a quality sheath to protect the blade, which is great a great way to keep the blade sharp for longer.
I received this knife at a discounted price in exchange for my honest review, and these are my unbiased thoughts on the knife.
