Being a photographer, I am constantly finding myself transferring photos and videos from my memory card to my PC. My laptop has a built in SD card reader, but it’s transfer rate is very low. Having USB 3.0 ports on my computer, I figured why not harness the speed and use a compatible card reader to speed up the transfer process? I did so, and the results were amazing!
This review is on the Unitek USB 3.0 Multi Memory Card Reader. This card reader by Unitek is has a uni body casing constructed of aluminum, and it looks oh so nice on my desk. It has a very thin low profile design and doesn’t take up much room on my desk. Protruding from the back is a thick USB cable, about a foot long.
At the front of the unit is a CF card slot, an SD card slot and a Micro SD card slot. Although most Micro SD cards include an SD adapter, including a slot designated for the Micro SD card is really convenient as I use that size memory card in my phones and tablets.
The transfer rate of the card reader is amazing compared to my computers built in reader. Files were copied in seconds as apposed to minutes on my built in unit. Copying large RAW photo files and HD video files is also speedy.
Since no driver installation is required, setup was a breeze. All I had to do to get it running was plug it into an available USB 3.0 port and bam it worked. True plug and play. Even though the card reader is designed to be used with USB 3.0, it is still backward compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.1 ports, but you will not get the upgraded speed.
I received this card reader at a discounted rate in exchange for my honest review, and these are my unbiased thoughts on the product.
